Central Laboratory in The college of Pharmacy

A black background with a black square

Description automatically generated with medium confidence     Central Laboratory in The college of Pharmacy  :

The central laboratory consists of four units: the nuclear magnetic resonance unit, the chromatography unit, the spectroscopy unit, and the biological evaluation unit.

Laboratory work:

The central laboratory provides all chemical and biological analysis services for various chemical compounds, both organic and inorganic. The analysis of organic compounds includes the analysis of medicines, toxins, food additives, environmental pollutants, and other organic compounds, while the analysis of inorganic compounds includes the analysis of heavy metals, the ionic ratios of ions, and the analysis of water.

In the field of analyzing organic compounds, the laboratory can do this using specialized devices such as liquid chromatography connected to a mass spectrometer, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), thermal analysis, ultraviolet radiation, infrared radiation, and elemental analysis. It is also possible to separate the components of samples from organic materials using chromatographic devices. Gaseous and liquid.

In the field of analyzing inorganic compounds, the laboratory does this using devices such as atomic absorption and an X-ray device with fluorescein emission (fluorescence).

The biological effects of various chemical compounds are examined using several laboratory equipment, including a quantitative polymerase chain reaction device, a centrifuge, and others.

Names of some devices available in the central laboratory:

  • NMR  Spectrometer unit :

Use of the Instrument

Instrument Type

Instrument Name

Determination of NMR spectra of 1H, 13C, and 15N atoms. The 2D experiment can correlate the spectra of the different atoms. The results obtained from such analyses are essential for structure elucidation of any synthetic or natural organic compounds. The instrument is characterized by the ability of analyzing very small quantities of the samples as it contains micro probe that permit the use of micro tubes for the analysis. This advantage also tremendously reduces the amount of NMR solvents used.

UltraShield Plus 500MHz (Bruker)

NMR  Spectrometer

  • Chromatography unit

Use of the Instrument

Instrument Type

Instrument Name

The use of this instrument allows the determination of the number of compounds in a mixture. The mass of each compound can be determined separately. The Mass Spectrometer present in this instrument is High Resolution Mass Spectrometer. It determines the accurate mass of the compounds and gives the correct molecular formula of each compound.

WATERS

Liquid chromatography – High Resolution Mass spectrometer

HPLC, is a chromatographic technique that can separate a mixture of compounds and is find so many applications as in plant extracts. It can also be used in biochemistry, analytical and pharmaceutical chemistry. It is used to identify, quantify and purify the individual components of the mixture.

WATERS

High Performance Liquid chromatography

This instrument is used for the analysis of volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds in complex mixtures as well as identification of their structures. It also enables the determination of the molecular weights of the compounds. The data base integrated with the instrument assist in interpretation of the results. This instrument is crucial for the study of essential oils produced by many plants and has wide applications in Pharmacy.

SHIMADZU

GC-MS

GC is a common type of chromatography used in analytical chemistry for analyzing volatile thermostable. The main uses of GC include testing the purity of essential oils and determine the number of their components as well as the relative amounts of each component.

PERKIN ELMER

Gas Chromatography

  • Spectroscopy unit :

Use of the Instrument

Instrument Type

Instrument Name

Quantitative determination of chemical elements

. AAS can be used to determine over 70 different elements in solution or directly in solid samples in water, soil, food ,etc.

SHIMADZU

Atomic Absorption

Applications of capillary electrophoresis:: It is used for  the analysis of compounds of clinical, forensic, cosmological, environmental, nutritional and pharmaceutical importance

Agilent

Capillary Electrophoresis

Ion chromatography is used for water chemistry analysis. Ion chromatographs are able to measure concentrations of major anions, such as fluoride, chloride, nitrate, nitrite, and sulfate, as well as major cations such as lithium, sodium, ammonium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium in the parts-per-billion (ppb) range.

Metrohm

Ion chromatography

Fluorescence spectroscopy is used in, among others, biochemical, medical, and chemical research fields for analyzing organic compounds.

Jasco

Spectofluorometer

Determination of functional groups as OH-and COOH in organic compounds.

Jasco

F.T.I.R

• Automatic search for major and minor solid/powder matter components.

• Phase identification can be carried out by searching the ICDD’s PDXL data base (more than 250,000 references).

• Quantitative XRD analysis through the value obtained from single analysis can be in form of report.

Ultima IV

X Ray Diffractometer + PDXL software

Quantitative analysis of inorganic compounds in the visible range and quantitative analysis of organic compounds  in the UV range and determination of some functional groups

Jasco

UV / Visible V-630 Spectrophotometer

Percentage analysis of Carbon, Hydrogen, Nitrogen and Sulfur in organic compounds. The results obtained from the instrument enable the determination of the molecular formula of organic compounds.

PerkinElmer 2400

CNH S/O analyzer

Elemental analysis for heavy metals as Zn, Cd and Pb in natural drugs, herbs, water, food, soils and etc.

Varian 810 – MS

ICP - MS

This instrument can measure the rotation in plane polarized light by optically active substances. That can be quantitative analytical method to determine concentrations. It can also be used for determination of sugar concentration in solutions.

Kruss

Polarimeter

  • Biological Evaluation unit

Use of the Instrument

Instrument Type

Instrument Name

RT-PCR is widely used in the diagnosis of genetic diseases and, semi-quantitatively, in the determination of the abundance of specific different RNA molecules within a cell or tissue as a measure of gene expression. It is used to quantitatively measure the amplification of DNA using fluorescent dyes.

Analytikjena - Germany

qPCR cycler or Real Time-PCR

Gel documentation, or gel imaging, systems are used to record and measure labeled nucleic acid and protein in various types of media such as agarose, acrylamide or cellulose.

UVsolo TS - Biometra

Gel Documentation System

It is used in chemistry, biology, biochemistry and clinical research areas for isolating and separating suspensions and immiscible liquids including blood samples. The role of a centrifuge in testing blood is to separate whole blood into its various components.

Hermle

High Speed Table Top Centrifuge – Z36HK

Autoclave is used in medical applications to perform sterilization and in the chemical industry. Many autoclaves are used to sterilize equipment and supplies by subjecting them to high-pressure saturated steam at 121 °C (249 °F) for a period.
